Climate change

最近被Science teacher催作业,然后昨天Leo花了两个小时写了下面这篇文章。我觉得写得很不错。可见Leo不是写作能力有问题,而是以前大部分的题目他不感兴趣,遇上他感兴趣的题目还是很有话说的。


Climate change

In 2027 to 2042 the world is predicted to cross the threshold of dangerous climate change. In 1896, a paper by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius first predicted that changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels could substantially alter the surface temperature through the greenhouse effect. This was the first mention of climate change. In the 1960’s this warming effect was becoming more evident. By the 1970’s scientific opinion increasingly favored the warming viewpoint. By 2003 there was the first climate disaster that was noticed: collapse of ice sheets in West Antarctica and Greenland. In 2008 Climate scientists (although not the public) recognized that even if all greenhouse gas emissions could be halted immediately, global warming will remain for a millennia. In 2019 the threats increased to wildfires, tornadoes, hurricanes.

Most people believed that climate change was caused mainly by coal plants, gas cars and burping cows. So solutions would be simple: rows of solar panels, bike to work. But let’s look at the full picture. Most rich people cause more carbon emissions than poorer people, well we simply tell country’s be be more poor, because 63% of carbon emissions come from middle to high income states. What do they say? NO. A country likes to advance and cutting back on income is not something they are fans of. Let’s take concrete, 8% of CO2 emissions come from concrete, well let’s find an alternative. But concrete is cheap and easy to make, and it’s used to make large infrastructure. So finding a solution that doesn't emit that much CO2 that's cheap and easy to make, and is reliable is going to take a lot of time and a lot of experiments and experiments cost money. Where's that money coming from?

Let’s take a look at meat, 40% of habitable land is used to produce meat. But meat comes from animals which emit methane which oxidizes to turn into carbon dioxide. Traditionally meals are mainly plant based topped with a bit of meat, but now there is more demand for meat. Now this 40% of habitable land is alarmingly a lot. Most of that could be used to plant natural ecosystems with trees, since trees basically suck up carbon dioxide and emit oxygen.

Now let’s talk about solutions. One thing people say a lot is: “we’ll make a zero carbon emission alternative for everything that has carbon emissions.” First of all for meat, that as we talked about emits carbon. So what are you thinking? Meat in test tubes or what, since I’d rather have my meat start on the open range rather than a test tube. Since technology is advancing so fast, won’t some technology in the future swoop in and save us all? Well technically something like that already exists, direct air capture of CO2 which sort of looks like a few air filters that are stacked up on each other, it captures carbon from the air and stores it underground in tanks so it can be used to make useful products. But if we wanted to make enough so that it actually makes a dent, then it would cost some ten trillion dollars. Currently where we could get that is from either investors that are fans of carbon capture, or the government. But you won’t make any profits, so investors are out of the list. Finally the government simply refuses to offer it, in fact it is doing the exact opposite, it is funding coal and oil plants. Joe biden actually promised to fix climate change by 2036, but if the government simply won’t fund carbon capture I don’t know how he’s going to do it. So what can YOU do to help stop climate change? Well take simple steps, why not buy an electric car? Why don’t you switch off the lights when you're not using them? How about eating less meat? Having the public take these steps makes it easier for the big contributors in climate change to take steps too. But we did all that, yes we did. Even if you don’t know you did, I know you did. In the pandemic we had no choice but to do all this. And what did it do? It lowered carbon emissions by 7% in 2020. If you eliminated 100% of your emissions for the rest of your life, you would save one second’s worth of emissions from the global energy sector. So you can’t do much but you can do something.

昨天Leo把《Behave: The Biology of Human at Our Best and Worst》还了,借了《 The Scientific American Book of Love, Sex, and the Brain: The Neuroscience of How, When, Why and Who We Love 》。老妈心里唉声叹气的想,这么浪漫的一件事非要从脑神经的角度看,真是大煞风景!这孩子将来还能好好谈恋爱吗?不过,照他这么看下去倒是省了我做为家长操心怎么给他补齐Human growth and development课程的问题。 Leo这么狼吞虎咽的读生物书,不知道会不会有厌倦的一天。如果有,那一天会什么时候到来?早早就来,还是博览群书之后才餍足?如果没有厌倦的一天,他又会走到哪里去?这些都是我做为homeschool mom非常期待得到答案的问题。Leo越来越成为一个让我默默关注他背影的孩子。古人云,得天下之英才而育之是人生一大乐事。我臭美的想,我自己生了一个英才出来,然后再自己育之,更是加倍的乐事!慢慢有一点享受homeschool的感觉了。

家校第一周

第一周已经过去了,开学的时候并没有想到要记家校日记,所以现在只能回顾上一周都做了些什么。 周一,走路去sedgewick取homeschool的study material。开学之前收到很多homeschool program的email,各种变化。最掉眼镜的是八月份一个月之内,CUSD学区注册homeschool的学生从24个火箭一样蹿到两百多。也许是Delta的功劳,也许是大家对学校教育越来越不满意,总之homeschool现在很时髦,自己居然不小心赶了一次潮流。把东西都取回来之后,我和Leo去了Sunnyvale minigolf course打了18洞,庆祝家校开学第一天。 周二,带Leo去参观了 Riekes center . 这个地方本来是新悦推荐去上 nature program 的,因为看到这个center也有youth athletic fitness program,就去顺便看了一下。 这个center从环境和设备上看,给我的印象很破旧,跟湾区各种高大上的fitness center完全不能比,简直没法想象怎么可能在Menlo Park那么寸土寸金的地方有这么破败的一个fitness center。但是带我们参观的大男孩却给我留下了很好的印象,甚至可以说完全改变了我对这家center的印象。Riekes center的宗旨很独特,是一个残疾人开办的,旨在帮助任何人 (All interests, all physical capcabilities, all ages, all races, .......),而不是针对特别热爱体育的达人。这一点应该对Leo很重要,我感觉他对体育运动有很多抵触心理,因为自己几乎什么运动都不擅长。从那里出来之后,回家的路上我问Leo对这个center的印象如何,他居然说还不错,想要尝试一下customized training program, 如果是今天接待我们的大哥哥来train就更好了。我非常高兴Leo能愿意尝试customized fitness training,希望这里能真的培养起他锻炼身体的好习惯。今年6月份体检的时候,Leo的身高55英尺(在growth chart上25%),体重58磅(在growth chart上5%)。简直让人欲哭无泪!如果customized fitness...

Leo's first day at middle school

Leo今天第一次去Hyde上选修课,因为疫情的原因,家长只能送到校门口,不能进入校园。8:30看着他跟着一大堆学生走进铁栅栏门的时候居然有点儿小担心,怕他会不会不适应教室里的环境。 回到家,写下这几句话我才感觉放松了一点。再次鼓励自己,“我必不至缺乏!” Leo也是一样。 10:30走路去接Leo回家。远远的从铁栅栏门里看到他走过来,跟其他的孩子逆流而行,还朝我挥了挥手,看起来情绪不错。回家的路上和他聊上的这两节课怎么样,他显然很喜欢,特别是Metal课上同桌的孩子给了他很好的印象 (The students in metal class are really nice!)。不过,他因为错过了两周课,所以第一天上课只是做安全教育(木工和金工用很多电动工具),还没来得及开始真正的project。他看到别的孩子已经做了很多了,有点儿着急,觉得别人应该不会是也一周只上一次课,没准儿是每天都有一节选修课。好吧,我只好发email去问home study program的负责人,看看中学选修课是不是居然这么奢侈,可以一周上五次。(居然真的是奢侈到选修课每周四天!!!这中学生活真是爽。) 然后到了家都没喘口气,Leo洗了手就直接坐下来做2019年AMC8的竞赛题,兴致很高的样子。尤其是昨天听我说我做这套题也只得了19分,有三道题在规定时间内没做完,然后做完的题还做错了三道。朋友家的牛娃(也是Leo很熟悉的小朋友)上四年级的时候去参加那次竞赛得了18分,比我这个统计博士只少了一分🙈真是不能比。 不过,我对于各类竞赛的心态倒很能躺平,觉得竞赛所追求的速度和准确率都不是重要的东西,对真正学好数学没有多少帮助,甚至如果刻意追求的话反倒伤害对数学的兴趣。竞赛题唯一的可取之处在于解题思路的不同寻常,不过这一点在家里自己拿竞赛题来做做练习就足够了,完全没必要为了这个原因参加竞赛。 然后想到其他问题上的焦虑或者担心,我觉得在数学竞赛上的躺平心态真是一个收获。教育过程,或者教养过程,会遇到很多挑战,像竞赛这样好多人蜂拥而上,不清楚自己的真正目的,只是因为内卷,或者别人做了我也不甘落后,的事情真是太多了。数学竞赛这回事是因为我自己已经是统计博士了,对此有足够深入的了解,而且自己的心理足够强大,所以不去参与内卷完全不成问题,而且可以凭借自己的知识和心态避免内卷可能给孩子造成的伤害。但是很多其他事情...
